Types of Massage For Dogs
When you want to give your dog a rub-down, you should understand that there are different types of dog massage
that you can use. The various types include:
- EfflurageKneading
- Passive touch
- Passive joint movement
- Tapotement
- Stroking

Efflurage
This is whereby you rub the dog's whole body, which includes both parts of the limbs. You place one hand over
the other in circular motions, which is helpful in enhancing blood flow.
Kneading
When you want to stimulate muscle fibers, kneading is necessary. This technique is also useful in stimulating
hair coat and skin. In kneading, you pinch and roll the dog's skin, as you put pressure on the muscles rather than
the bones.
Passive joint movement
This technique resembles physical therapy, as you move and stretch the dog's joints. It requires great skill so
that you position the joints properly. Otherwise you risk creating trauma to the pet's tissues.
Passive touch
In passive touch, no pressure or movement is applied. All it involves is placing your hand on the dog for
between half a minute to one and a half minutes in order to give warmth to the tissues. This helps in creating a
calming effect.
Tapotement
This is whereby you brush and tap different muscle areas in order to stimulate your dog. It is not recommended
on dogs that have been abused in the past due to its very stimulating nature.
Stroking
This is what many dog owners do even without knowing that they are actually applying a massage for pets. You
should use it as you complete your massaging session, using slow and light motions.
You should therefore learn more about pet massages in order to receive the great benefits.
